Genealogy Sites Vary! Choose Carefully!

There are many different Genealogy sites to choose from. Some are excellent and have good reviews.  You may have to try a few to see which one suits your needs. There is nothing wrong in belonging to more than one Genealogy Site. In fact many people do. Accurate information may be difficult to find so where possible check to see if the site you choose encourages reliable sources.

 Some sites are Free. Others charge a Fee. If you select a site that charges remember that it does not neccesarily follow that the information you view is all correct. If the site allows you to contribute your own family tree you can have  have full control and you can elect to verify your family tree to the degree that suits you although you may need to go off site to locate accurate sources. Ancestry is an enormously popular site and is well known for assisting members to obtain their DNA.

Collaborative Sites by their nature are prone to disputes! Leaders may intervene. 

Negative behaviour to look out for:-

Leaders creating reports in Private Off Site Groups for the purpose of discussing Members is not consistent with Honourable behaviour!

Furthermore it prevents any investigation by overseeing bodies such as the EU since the offsite Private Groups cannot be officially linked to the offeding Genealogy site and thus may be seen as particularly devious. Denying Members the right to contact other Members is Cult like beaviour especially if the Leaders portray themselves  as benefactors

If you become distressed or are aware that another Member is in distress stay alert and check the site reviews. Remember you can always vote "with your "feet" that is you can walk away!

My personal choice is Geni. The leaders appear 

to me to be helpful and ethical. The site is large 

enough to be useful. There is a choice of Free or Pay. There seems to be a happy community with opportunity to discucuss common ancestors and provided one has entered sufficient ancestors one can easily discover relationships with other Members and prominent figures in history as well as current world leaders.
