Registers of Baptisms 1628-1964, Marriages 1628-1964 and Burials 1628-1973
have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office, where Bishop's Transcripts

Robert & Mary were "dissenters" outside the C of E: they had their chn Mary
bp'd 1800 & Thomas bp'd 1801 in Lady Huntingdon Chapel, Goring, Oxfordshire.
By 1808 they were living in Wallop, Hampshire. There were probably other sibs
born between 1801 & 1809. A daughter, possibly Mary, married a SMITH and had
James SMITH b 1829 Downton, Wilts., who appears with their daughter Anne
below in 1861-91 as her nephew.

The main evidence we have that their son Thomas bp 1801 Goring, Oxford
is our Thomas b1803-4 South Stoke, Oxon. in the 1851 & 1871 censuses,is
 i) South Stoke near Reading is less than 2 miles from Goring;
ii) Thomas appears to name his farm after his father's birth place.

Robert's 1st 2 chn Mary & Thomas were bp'd in the Methodist Chapel at Goring.
(Goring is 12 m NW of Reading, Berkshire. Pangbourne lies in the middle.)

See http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ben.quant/connexions/electlady.html
for more on Lady Huntingdon & a riveting account of the times.
Until 1781 her chapels were societies within the Church of England. (The first
Methodist Society was formed in 1738.)

It appears that Thomas named his farm after his father's birth place, Bowden.
In 1993 near Pangbourne I visited Bower Farm and Lower Bowden Farm (1.5m W of
Pangbourne). (See my photos and correspondence with secretary Mrs RICE of the
present owner of Lower Bowden Farm.)
By 1851, the family had relocated from Pangbourne to Sussex Place, Greenham.
Greenham, Thatcham is 2m E of Newbury, Berks. (Their dr 3 below m'd a man from
Thatcham.) The next entry is "One uninhabited house", then several families at
STROUD Green, then it goes back to Sussex Place.

c1884 to NZ: "The family came out in the `SOUKAR' after the `ST LEONARDS' was
wrecked, landing to settle in Christchurch." "Father James & his brother
John were chandlers; the 2 brothers would buy the cargo of Australian
wheatships sailing to England and sell it later. James would shoot game & leave
his brother in charge. He turned his assets to gold & set sail for NZ on the ST
LEONARD's sailing ship. They were cut in half in the English Channel in fog by
a new fangled steamer. The gold went to the bottom. No lives were lost &
another ship took them to Christchurch. Their families were sorry for them &
gave them the WITHERS bible at that time. He had no insurance & didn't know for
years that Shaw Savill had insured the baggage. Told that he'd have to work
now, he said the children would have to." -from Edith, m2 of ID 2331 below.

Des died in Auckland hospital after a fall getting out of bed at 28 Alamein
Ave... He was really keen on trout fishing & had lots of gear. Before we got
the Ngongotaha batch we would get up about 3 or 4am, at the Heads place, having
got the boat (a 12' 6" Condor craft), gear, food & hot cocoa with sweetened
condensed milk in thermos flasks organised before hand & drive to Lake Rotoiti
or Rotoma & start trolling at first light, usually getting 1 or 2 trout by
8-9am. Then we would go ashore & light a fire & get it going with large pieces
of wood which we let die down to a deep bed of embers, cleaning the trout in
the meantime. Then we would wrap the trout in thick newspaper which was soaked
right through in the lake, it was then placed on the bed of embers & by the
time the outer newspaper started to burn we turned it over & did the other side
- about 5mins a side. When the newspaper was opened the skin would stick to it
& we picked the flesh out with our fingers & ate it placed in thick slices of
bread covered in a lot of butter. Fish nicely smoked too, the best I ever
tasted...
Des bought a black Sunbeam Talbot brand new in 1952. He liked to drive it
fast on occasion. The older HARGREAVES children remember it at Pt. Chev. Pat is
the youngest. I can remember it from Poroporo on as the heavy doors would swing
shut & jam my fingers on occasion. That hurt. He loved that car. It was built
like a tank. He had it at the Heads, eventually buying a new Hillman Hunter
when they first came out... They started me in several activities, including
sailing & skiing.

and Keith had a superb collection of rocks & crystals & a magnificent
prize-winning garden with a stream running through it. Her search for gemstones
took her down emerald mines in South Africa as a consultant to the Cobra

was also a judge at gem shows.

Arline emailed me 31.7.02 re recent floods: The damage to the property
has been enormous, increased by a second flood two weeks later which
had it been twenty minutes more rain it would have equalled the first
then again at night another. 3 in 5 weeks. The EQC have been 3 times
to reassess land loss under an end bedroom and the access bridge
foundations.Have to furiously dig a drain through garden outside the kitchen to
avert reflooding in the crystal and mineral display room and foyer.....the
replaced carpet had been down 3 days! Saved it. Neighbours behind me diverted
water my way! The gabion basket put in too close to the bridge [to
save land loss to the manse directly in front of me ] and at the time
I said it was angled too much to my side. Have lived here 34yrs and
know the power of this stream and have been through 9 major floods. The
30-35ft logs carried down took out my 30yr old nikaus, huge pongas and
10ft of bank and section carried on 50m and took out my rear
neighbours bridge [estimated 20,000 to replace]. The gabion baskets
turned the torrent on to my bridge and scoured 1:3m of streambed and
the 1m solid abutments saved it .From past experience and with water
pouring through and out the frontdoor, most suitably attired in a
shorty nighty, knickers a fluffy cardigan and barefooted with Lacey
[spaniel] lept into the car..''Lace don't know if we've got a bridge
but here goes'...and through a 20ft plume of water we went to the
safety of the street. Twas a bit hairy running back to the
house.[12pm] but at least I knew I've have wheels, others were
landlocked for 9 to 15 days Over a year ago a war on ginger
(again). How I begged my stream neighbours not to spray ('but it will
come up and spread into the garden')....they had not been through a
major flood...and the ginger never encroached in my 30+yrs .Ginger my
side held well but very flattened although the water raged through the
gardens I still have your wonderful tamaillo tree laden with fruit!
The neighbours lost 3-5m of land! It's hard yakka digging sand and
rocks off the gardens...the family came and worked like trojans but
there is so much to be replanted. Spent my life digging hard rock in
mines and dragging it miles out of the ranges. Thank goodness this
doesn't faze completely.

Obituary courtesy of David BROAD 4.12.08:
Arline Eleanor BROAD (1928-2008) was a prominent member of the Thames
community and well known for her award winning garden in Augustus Street and
as a gemologist of international repute.
In the late 1960s Arline & Keith Broad purchased a secluded property bounded
by the Hape stream on Augustus Street. Over the next few years this was
transformed into magnificent garden popular with locals for wedding
photographs and garden parties. Arline, who was fluent in Latin, knew the
botanical name of very plant and travelled far and wide to collect
specimens. Always ahead of her time, a good example of this is that in the
days when the now ubiquitous avocado was virtually unknown in NZ she
travelled to Californian to get root stock. She kept the Auckland airport
authorities, who had to check these plants, very much amused as they never
knew what she was going to return with next!
An intrepid traveller she was the first European woman to visit Huza (a
small valley in the Himalayas known in common mythology as the fabled
Shangri la) and her expeditions included travelling up the Amazon (in search
of Imperial Topaz) and many trips to Europe and North America always with
some objective to collect and bring back to New Zealand some little treasure
or other. She also knew the Coromandel like the back of her hand and her
mineral collection included many rare specimens collected over the course of
some thirty years. The bulk of her collection is now in Rotorua.
Arline later became a stone craver, mainly of greenstone and a silver and
goldsmith. One gold chain was produced from collecting of gold bearing ore
from the Thames goldfields. This was crushed and refined using a berdan (at
Ted Roberts plant up the Waiati, he being one of the last of the original
gold miners from heyday of the Thames gold fields - incidentally realizing
that many of the old ways would be lost within a generation, the process,
once so common but now hardly known, was recorded in detail as a historical
record), then retorted the gold using the mercury amalgam method, refined,
graded and then using gold rollers in her workshop she drew the raw gold
into long strands and then meticulously made the small links forming the
completed solid gold chain. It is thought that this one of the last items to
have been fully made of the distinctive Thames gold, made and completed on
in the township).
One of her greater passions was gemology and she became a Fellow of the
Gemological association of Great Britain after sitting their rigorous entrance
examination. Her collection ranged from great lumps of carnelian from the 309
(mid Coromandel Peninsula) and fine opal she mined herself in Coober Pedy
Australia, to exceptionally rare Kashmir rubies brought back from India.
Incidentally, the collection also had the
last known gold ore (known as specimen stone) from the exceptionally rich
Caledonian Mine here in Thames. The ore was so rich from this mine that the
massive stampers (used for crushing the ore) jammed. And while on that
subject the last known crystal assay set circa 1870 (from the Royal Oak
Toketea Coromandel) was included in the Broad family collection along
with original photographs of the goldfields, assay scales, letters, books,
manuscripts and documents.
Arline was greatly involved in the local community being a member, often on
the committee of many groups. Due to her expertise she was asked by the
Historic Places trust to audit their mineral collection and was a
judge of the National Association of New Zealand Rock & Mineral Clubs. In
common with many of her old Thames friends she was also engaged in town
projects, many now forgotten, such as raising of funds to build the Thames
High School gym. The whole township was mobilised to raise the funds to build
it holding a "Queens carnival".

headmaster, which meant he was a mentor & go to arbitrator & boss of all the
Maori people in the area. He got on with them well, & they liked him. Edith
retired from teaching when I was born.
Des retired about 1958 when I was approaching kindergarten age & they bought
9 The Heads, Whakatane. Lived there until about 1978 when they sold up & bought
28 Alamein Rd. Takapuna. I had an excellent growing up childhood at The Heads.
Boats & bush. There were three other boys the same age there & we were the
Heads gang. Run amok all over the place & across the river etc. Plenty of Kai
Moana of every type, just there to help ourselves.
Des bought & sold several properties in the Bay of Plenty. We had a nice

Later we owned 5 Grace Ave. Mt Maunganui. I was into surfing then. We had

6.6.2020: "Des & I used to do in the boat is go out to Whale Island aka
Moutohora Island be, to get paua. This was from about 1960 to 1965. We left
from "The Heads" which has a treacherous Bar crossing you have to know & be
careful of. A sandbar extending most of the way across the river, which changes
its position on a regular basis.
Des bought a brand new 18hp Evinrude for it in about 1960. I think the Condor
Craft 12'6'' or 3.6m was one of the first production fibreglass runabouts. It
had a flat bottom though which meant it was suited to calm water & not the open
sea.
Mostly it would come up a bit rough in the afternoons when we were heading
back with a large sack of Paua & Des would lie down in the bottom of the boat
(lower center of gravity) & I would drive us back, constantly adjusting for
either on coming or following waves. (depending on wind direction) It is an art
form you have to get right - or swim. He had total confidence in me.
The Paua was trimmed & the edible part was then covered by a teatowel &
beaten with a wooden rolling pin to tenderize it. It was then put through a
hand mincer to get minced paua which we ate in fritters.
The motor was powerful enough to tow me on water skis from when I was about
8 to 12.
At Primary school I was the heaviest kid in our school representative rugby
team, but I was very fit & with a good build from lots of swimming & rowing
from an early age. I really liked playing Rugby & was always in the forwards,
usually at "breakaway" on the side of the scrum as I was a fast runner & a
devastating tackler as many opposing backs found out. I really enjoyed that!
We had our own dinghys from 8yrs & regularly rowed or swam across the river.
We had big whitebait nets we rowed across when they were running & filled large
kerosene tins. We ate those in fritters too. We shared a lot of Kai Moana with
family friends.
I had a crayfish pot I would row down towards the Bar at the entrance on a
high enough tide & get through a gap in the breakwater. Then I would drop it
over the side in about 20ft or 6m, baited with the meaty skeleton of a fish,
leaving it overnight. I would always get some large crayfish / rock lobster."

the following words were inscribed:
 In Loving Memory of
CATHERINE ANN NEWTON TUTTLE
WHO PASSED AWAY 3RD OCT 1957
THEM ALSO WHICH SLEEP IN JESUS WILL GOD BRING WITH HIM 31 THESS. 4. 14
She bequeathed P4000 to the Oxford Diocesan Board of Finance for the upkeep of
the grounds and graves in the churchyard. She had previously lived at Glencoe,
in Kintbury, where she made her will. She provided a monthly income of P4 6s 8d
for her husband. He later challenged this in court, winning P20 a week in
addition to this amount, and a lump sum payment of P1040 in a court decision
made in 1958. Her niece, Dorothy LITTEN [551 above], should benefit from any
surplus from the fund that may pertain after her husband's death. She
bequeathed P3000 to Gertrude Mary HOWELL her sister-in-law [sr of her husband?]
of Highfield, Woodborough Road, Radstock, Somerset,
and P1000 to another sister-in-law Lilian Louisa Susan OSMOND [so married to
her brother 253 Michael, 258 George, 259 Richard ?? No such m found at FS].
Lilian having died, the legacy was transferred to her nieces,
Dorothy [551] and Ida LITTEN [552] who in a codicil to the Will were to benefit
from a fund of P3000 over which she had charge under the terms of the will of
Catherine's aunt, Emma Louisa LIDDERDALE (the relation with whom she was living
according to the 1901 census), who died March 3, 1920.
The remainder of her estate was disbursed among various charities: her
clothes to the Salvation Army at Newbury; and to the Distressed Gentlefolks'
Aid Association of Knaresborough Place, London, SW5 various items of furniture
including a wardrobe, a mahogany chest of drawers, a fireside chair, a small
store cupboard, and a dressing table, and the remainder of her property.
The net value of the estate was estimated at P159,739 16s 5d, although it
appears that as much as in excess of £86,000 of this was swallowed up by her
widower's court action, and tax.

"I have a box of 5" x 4" glass negatives a couple of which are attached
which might be of interest to you. None of the plates have any captions but I
suppose it might be that they are of the NEWTON Family and house etc. One
house featured is a very large half timbered property there are pictures of
the family and horse and carriage etc my best guess of when they were taken
would be 1900-1910. I suppose there might be 50 of them. I have not copied
them all but could copy some more if you think there are any identifying
features that would help me select.

2.3 NEWTON of Crowmarsh Battle, Benson, Oxford 0 0-Thomas NEWTON m sp-Martha Chn ex IGI P006481 1565-1858. Of Crowmarsh Battle (also known as Preston Crowmarsh) on the bank of the Thames just W of Benson: see the wonderful article by Kate TILLER "Rural Resistance 1800-1914: Custom, Community and Conflict in South Oxf." at http://www.tlio.org.uk/history/ruresis.html leading to the Swing Riots - HOBSBAWM and RUDÉ. "Thomas NEWTON, who was to prove a frequent catalyst in events in south Oxfordshire, had moved to the district in 1797, establishing himself at Crowmarsh Battle Farm... an enterprising and assertive farmer whose practices were quoted by Arthur YOUNG, General View of the Agriculture of Oxfordshire (1813)... Benson has no major resident landowners. Land tax assessment between 1785 and 1832... In 1827 Thomas's eldest son, Robert Aldworth NEWTON, then aged 29 and probably just married, moved into Fifield Manor, thus bracketing Benson with a NEWTON family presence on each side of the village... The notice which Thomas placed in Jackson's Oxford Journal 17.11.1827 ... informed ... that parliament would be petitioned to bring in a bill for 'dividing and allotting all the open and common fields, common meadow, common pastures and commonable lands, and waste ground in the parish of ... Benson'. This evoked a swift and highly-organized response. A meeting was held at the White Hart Inn in the centre of Benson... 'it would be very much lamented were the notorious avarice of Mr NEWTON to involve a whole Parish in ruin'... At 2am Sunday 21.11.1830, Thomas NEWTON was wakened at Crowmarsh Battle Farm by a group of around thirty labouring men demanding that he listen to their grievances... He donated a barrel of beer at a neighbouring public house. The rioters subsequently called on Robert NEWTON, his eldest son... Of the 8 convicted ... of breaking NEWTON's threshing machines, 4 were sentenced to 7 years' transportation and 4 to ... Kelly's Directory for 1915 lists 11 farmers in Benson, cf 9 in 1852. [At Ewelme 7 to 3.]... At Gould's Grove Farm, part of the `NEWTON holding, Jerome K. JEROME, author of Three Men in a Boat, was in residence, although in 1910 the interest in the surrounding land remained with T.D. NEWTON whose address was Union Stockyards, Chicago, USA. Succeeding generations of NEWTONs apparently continued to seize commercial opportunities... Locally, too, NEWTON's successors were acting 'on the basis of a cool, economic calculation' ..." Each volume is about $80.00, but if you would like to only purchase

APPENDICES a. ABBREVIATIONS: b born, bp (or chr.) baptised, d died, m married, sp- spouse ............................................................................. b. DATES I use the English convention with month after day. So 3.4.1770 is 3rd April, not March 4. When known, the dates and places of birth and death follow each name. For example 23 2-Harriette Ruff NEWTON (1838 Pangbourne, Berks-1901 Christchurch; buried 1901 Linwood) ............................................................................. c. THE NUMBERING SYSTEMS (i) The children of the initial couple at 1., 0 1-Robert NEWTON m Mary, are numbered 1 2 3 ... The children of 3 say are numbered 31 32 33 ... The children of 31 say are numbered 311 312 313 ... and so on. If I refer to a person by their number I'll put it in square brackets,eg [31]. (ii) The generation number directly precedes the name with 2 dashes: the initial male Robert is prefixed 0-, his children are prefixed 1-, his grandchildren 2-, and so on. So to see who the siblings of 33 say are, 233 3-William James NEWTON ADNAMS (1870), one can either scan for adjacent "3--" or scan for 231, 232, 234, .... Generally a spouse's generation number is not given. ............................................................................. e. SOME LINKS ON THE WEB
