of October 5 says :-" One by one the
pioneers in the long prctracted struggle
that has asserted for the Church of
England her Catholic heritage are being
' called home,' and to-day we have to record
the death cf one who,whether it were by his
precept and example in his little quiet
village of Hambridge, or by his pen in the
larger sphere outside that limited circle,
has exerted a power of no common order in
bringing men and women to understund
what is meant by the Catholic faith.
Charles Stephen Grueber, whose death
occurred on Sunday morning at the St.
James's vicarage, graduated at Magdelen
Hall, Oxford, in 1889. He was ordained
deacon in 1840, and priest in the following
year, by the Bishop of Winchester, and
entered the living of Hambridge in 1844.
It is believed that he was practically the
first vicar of Hambridge. Until his resi
dence there no fabric existed to speak of,
no vicarage, no schools. These have all
been erected mainly by his wonderful
energy, and at the beginning of the pre.
sent year, in celebration of his jubilee as
vicar there, in a ne;ghbouring village he
has also erected a church at his own cost,
which was to have been consecrated by the
late Bishop of Bath and Wells, but some
little difficulty arose by the Bishop's death.
Mr Grueber's love for his parish was un
bounded, and year by year he gave away
more to his parishioners than he received
from his 'living.' In personal intercourse he
had a fund of charming knowledge, being
ever ready with stories of Oxford life and
clerical adventure. Air Grueber was a
member of the English Church Union, of
which body he was one of the original
members, with his lifelong friend Arch
deacon Dennison, of Taunton. In this
capacity he did, with others like the late
Canon Perry in the same field, a vast deal
in opposition to the ecclesiastical decisions
of the judicial committee of the Privy
Council. His grasp of detail, his concise
ness of statement, and his clear presenta.
tion of facts made him in this ephere a
controversialist of extraordinary power.
But it is as a writer of popular expositions
of the Catholic faith that he will be best
remembered by those who never came
within his personal influence. His famous
' Catechisms' on the church and the
sacraments have had immense circulation,
and there are few booke, even after all the
years that have elapsed since they first
appeared, that are so much to the point
and so easily understood of the people."

merchant, of the city of London. Mr S. H.
Grueber, of Ormley, is the last and
youngest member of the family; father,

attained the advanced age of 80

Educated at Hutchins School, Hobart, from 31 January 1881 until Christmas 1883. He then trained as a barrister and solicitor and was admitted to the Bar 19 August 1887. After a few years as solicitor to the the Lands Titles department he went into partnership in 1894 with his father, and the firm was renamed C. H. Elliston & Son. About 1903 he went into partnership with W. M. Hpdgmsn, but after the partnership was dissolved three or four years later he continued alone, until joining Athol Johnston , when the name of the firm became Elliston & Johnston. From 1924 until his retirement in 1932 he carried on his business by himself.
Vivian was keen on sport. He was an active member of the Lindisfarne Golf Club Lindisfarne Cricket Club. Formany years he served on the Clarence Counceil, and was chairman of the Lindisfaren ward. He also held office in the Shiplovers' Society of Tasmania, and during the latter part of his life he became well known as a grower of roses [HUTCHINS REG., NS36; 101, quoted in AOT (Hobart General Index; CYC.
